5 app recommendations in January 2024

The regular app recommendations in the Sir Apfelot blog will continue in the new year. Today the 5 software tips for January 2024 are available. Included are tools for taking screenshots in different sizes, a way to hide the capture indicator in the menu bar (e.g. for Let's Play videos), a system extension for media control including “Dynamic Island” on the Mac, and a program for decryption of shortened links (as well as the removal of tracking parameters), and finally a media player for local and online videos including advertising removal and AirPlay.

1. RetinaCapture

The RetinaCapture App for the Apple Mac is a practical aid for taking screenshots of different sizes, especially on high-resolution Retina displays. In addition to or instead of the large screen recording in Retina resolution, a smaller recording in half the resolution can be made. Each screenshot can be created individually in one of the two sizes or in both sizes at the same time. It is also possible to select the entire screen, a self-defined area or a program window. The recordings can be saved as JPEG, PNG and TIFF. RetinaCapture can be used as a menu bar app.

Because this orange or green dot is also displayed if, for example, B. a screen recording takes place. So if you want to put together a tutorial, document system or app usage or record a Let's Play, the recording indicator can get in the way. YellowDot simply covers the dot with another black dot. In addition, other icons in the menu bar that appear during audio recording, screen recording and/or camera use can be overlaid.

3. Media Mate

The MediaMate App for the Apple Mac modernizes a few controls and media displays by adapting them to the iPhone. The old display for brightness and volume in the lower middle of the screen is replaced by a bar on one side of the screen. A “Now Playing” display ensures that the song being played appears in the middle of the top edge of the screen. This is intended to give the notch of modern MacBooks a “dynamic island” style. The brightness of the keyboard on the MacBook can also be controlled using the HUD element or key combination. All functions can be individually (de)activated and extensively customized. A 30-minute demo can be tried out for free; the full version is chargeable.
