5 app recommendations in March 2024

It's time again for a handful of app recommendations. This month I will once again introduce you to five useful Mac programs that you can use on macOS on your Apple computer. This time I brought you software for these specific uses: translating text with multiple services at the same time, converting audio files to other formats, using a chatbot AI in the Notes app, making Windows games work on the Mac, and an extended clipboard for Use Mac, iPad and iPhone. So there is something for a wide variety of Mac application areas :)

1. Easydict

Easydict is a free, open source software that helps translate texts. After opening the app, you will find it at the top of the macOS menu bar. After selecting, not only entered or copied texts can be transferred. The Easydict software can also be configured so that it displays a translation option next to selected text - no matter where you select it. This even works on images and screenshots. In addition, not only a single dictionary is used, the Apple solution, Bing, DeepL, Google Translator, etc. can be used. Since it is a Chinese app, Baidu, Tencent Translate and Ali Translate are also offered; but can be deactivated.

2. Audio Converter

With Audio Converter from MediaHuman I will once again introduce you to an app with which you can convert audio files. Various formats are supported, such as MP3, AAC, WMA, OGG, FLAC, Apple Lossless, AIFF, M4R, OPUS and WAV. In times of streaming services and often standardized recording formats of various audio devices, such programs are no longer as popular as they were 20 years ago. However, it is good to have a trustworthy representative of this app category on hand. Because when searching for audio file converters you can come across a lot of nonsense in search engines. With this free app you are on the safe side.

3. NotesOllama

NotesOllama is not a standalone app, but it is an exciting extension for Apple's notes app. The notes plugin integrates a locally running text AI and ensures that you can, for example, For example, you can have questions written down in the notes app answered directly using the chatbot function. Since downloaded language models (LLMs) are used, the whole thing can be used offline. However, there must be enough space on the hard drive as the language models are of a decent size. In addition to answering questions, there is the option of having texts summarized and rewritten in various ways. You can also have the content explained to you.

4. Porting kit

The Porting Kit is also a rather special software for the Apple Mac. Because it can quickly and easily apply Wineskin technology to make Windows games playable on the Mac. In addition, the technology can be used to run games as well as some other programs made for Windows under macOS and on the Apple Silicon (M-Chip). However, it must be said that Wine, Wineskin and the like do not support 100% all Windows apps. So take a look at the relevant documentation for the porting kit or similar applications. Or try the whole thing out to see if you have success with it. The porting kit is at least comparatively easy to use.
