Since the update to tvOS 17, it has become even easier to use a VPN on compatible Apple TV devices - without any complicated configuration of the internet router. A VPN service like Surfshark can e.g. B. help to obtain streaming offers and games from other countries.
Officially, the easier implementation of VPN connections should also benefit companies and educational institutions, for example when using material from their own network. In the private sector, a VPN app primarily ensures that geoblocking is circumvented and surfing is more anonymous.

Chapter in this post:
Benefits of a VPN on Apple TV
There are several advantages to using a VPN app on the Apple TV:
- Consuming content from different countries through local streaming apps and sites
- Protecting privacy while using apps and online services
- Avoiding personalized advertising and the creation of user advertising profiles
This is what the Surfshark app for Apple TV offers
Anyone who already has a Surfshark subscription can easily download the app offered for tvOS from the App Store, log in and enjoy the advantages of the Virtual Private Network. Multiple devices can be equipped with one subscription - in addition to the Mac, the iPhone, the PC and tablet, including the Apple TV. If you don't yet use Surfshark, you can currently benefit from a favorable offer including an 85% discount and free months. A good offer to start using the Apple TV safely and worldwide.
The Surfshark app also offers a dedicated IP address on the Apple TV. From tvOS 17 and newer versions, setup is super easy. There is no longer any need to make complicated adjustments to the Internet router. There are various login options - the most convenient is using a QR code. The parallel use of Surfshark on different devices is also transferred to the Apple TV, so that the smartphone, the computer and the television box can run simultaneously via one subscription.
Surfshark in the Apple TV App Store
You can find the Surfshark app for using a simple and fast VPN service directly in the App Store on your Apple TV. To do this, simply go to the App Store and search for “Surfshark”. After entering the first few letters, it should be the first app that appears. You can then go to the store's app page for more information and to download.
Conclusion: Finally an easy way to use Surfshark as an Apple TV VPN
As you can see in the screenshot from the Apple TV App Store, Surfshark was only recently added to the offer. Now it is finally possible to use this VPN service with fast WireGuard, unlimited parallel connections and over 3.200 servers in over 100 countries natively under tvOS. Because VPNs are officially supported, you don't have to change any settings on your internet router or make any additional settings on your Apple TV.
Easy install the app, log in with your own account details (or scan the QR code with your smartphone) and enjoy the advantages of the offer. Have fun!

The far better solution is called PrivateRelay.
PrivateRelay is not a real VPN. Apple explicitly points this out. So it can't be compared with SurfShark, which enables a real VPN.
That's true, but at least you can encrypt your request and separate the IP from the DNS query. And I think you don't have an exact “location”, just the rough region with the IP. This helps so that websites for weather forecasts or local news, for example, can still “recognize” which corner you are coming from, but it is no longer so easy for the advertising industry to use this to create a profile of the surfer. So for many people the private relay function should be enough.
And you have better data protection and higher security.
That depends on what you want. If I get a VPN to access a website from another country, then the VPN is the better solution. ;-)
I didn't say it was a VPN, just the better solution.
Hello Johannes!
Thanks for the tip. But I'm afraid that won't help me. I tried streaming the F1 via SurfShark. Unfortunately only with moderate success. Broadcasting live TV applications from other countries (especially Austria) doesn't really work.
