Apple Watch Hard Reset – Force restart the smartwatch

If the Apple Watch no longer responds, no or perhaps even incorrect entries are registered on the display, or an app has caused the entire system to crash, then there is a solution. This consists of an Apple Watch hard reset, i.e. the forced restart of the smartwatch. As a rule, you don't have to worry about stored data, because the term "reset" in this case cannot be translated as "resetting" the watch. Only the watchOS operating system is completely restarted once to eliminate possible bugs.

You can force the Apple Watch to restart with a hard reset. This means macOS can be closed and reloaded, even if no display input is possible.

Force restart Apple Watch: Here's how!

If nothing works on your Apple smartwatch and a regular restart using the switch-off function (hold the side button, tap the power symbol and then drag the switch-off control on the display to the right) is not possible, you can take this measure grab. Because it is possible to force the Apple Watch to restart without any display input. This is how you do it:

  1. Press and hold the Digital Crown and the side button simultaneously for at least 10 seconds
  2. Only release the two buttons when the Apple logo appears on the display
  3. Wait until the Apple Watch has fully loaded the watchOS system before using it

More tips for troubleshooting Apple Watch problems

In addition to the forced restart, there are a few other points you should consider when solving problems with your Apple Watch. For example, bugs that crept in with a major system update (watchOS xx -> watchOS xy) or the upgrade to a new major version (watchOS x.0 -> watchOS y.0) are often eliminated with smaller updates. So you should always install the latest updates on versions like watchOS xx1, xy2 and so on.

However, the updates and, if necessary, the Apple Watch hard reset do not stand alone to solve problems on the smartwatch. Since it is paired with the iPhone, this should also be kept up to date and restarted if there are problems with one, the other or both devices. If the iPhone cannot be switched off and on again normally, there is also the option to force a restart here:
