There are various options for expanding the memory of the Nintendo Switch using an SD card and storing game screenshots, game videos or other data on it, thereby relieving the internal storage space. Various supported microSD cards are recommended by the manufacturer; especially microSCHC and microSDXC. At this point I would like to give you tips for choosing the right and in my opinion the best memory card for the Nintendo Switch and for using it in the console.
Chapter in this post:
microSD memory cards for the Nintendo Switch
The Nintendo switch console, which was released in 2017 and is also very popular in 2018, is not only equipped with different controllers, a handheld and a TV mode and a slot for the game cards. It also comes with an interface for mobile storage on microSD, microSDHC and microSDXC memory cards. But which ones? memory card is the right one – and which manufacturer should you choose?
Here are a few criteria for the right microSD / microSDXC cards that you can use with your Nintendo Switch console:
- MicroSD, microSDHC and microSDXC are supported
- A system update on the Nintendo Switch is required to use XC cards (Internet connection required)
- Memory card should have at least UHS-I as standard (Ultra High Speed Phase I)
- The read speed should be between 60 and 95 MB / s
To use the microSD card, it may also be necessary to format it using the Nintendo Switch console. The card is reset and adapted to the file system of the switch. It works like this:
Home menu -> System Settings -> System -> Formatting options -> Format the microSD card
But be careful: All files, folders, saved software and documents on the card will be lost because the memory is completely cleaned up. Everything remains as usual on the console; so, no fear ;)

Buy card storage for the console
In the list above you have already read the specs recommended by Nintendo for the storage accessories that you can use in the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo names a certain manufacturer in its Recommendations but not. That's why I would recommend SanDisk at this point. In my opinion, these are the best variants of card memories with reliable quality and consistently good read and write speeds. Here are a few examples of microSDXC for the Nintendo Switch:

Use the SD card in the Nintendo Switch
Inserting the microSD card into the Nintendo Switch and removing it are both very simple processes. To insert the card, proceed as follows:
- Quits games / software and turns off the Nintendo Switch
- Take the handheld out of the dock, case or case
- Fold the rear stand backwards (or upwards if the console is lying down)
- Insert the microSD card into the now exposed slot (label on top)
- Stop sliding when a click announces that the memory is locked into place
Removal is also very easy. Like plugging in, it works in much the same way as changing a game cartridge. Just elsewhere on the device. For the sake of completeness, here are the individual steps:
- Quits all games / other software and turns off the Nintendo Switch
- Take the handheld out of the dock, case or case
- Fold the rear stand backwards (or upwards if the console is lying down)
- Push the card lightly into the console until you hear / feel a click
- The memory card slips a bit out of the Nintendo Switch; now it can be pulled out.
