For users of the new iPhone 14 (Pro) in the USA and Canada, "Notruf SOS" via satellite has been available since yesterday. The new feature allows emergency calls to be made outdoors when the device is outside of a mobile network and WiFi network. This is intended to enable rescues, rescues and emergency medical care in remote regions. "Additionally, users who want to keep friends and family informed of their whereabouts while off-line can now use the 'Where is?' app. open and share their location via satellite' says Apple. In December, the whole thing will also be possible in Germany, France, Great Britain and Ireland.

Apple explains: satellite emergency call via the iPhone 14 (Pro)
If there is no mobile network or WLAN available for making an emergency call, the current iPhone generation (and future models) can switch to satellite communication. Information on the position and the incident/accident is requested for this purpose. All this happens via text queries on the display - the answers are then forwarded to a switching center as satellite SMS. The Apple-trained specialists based there then forward the information received to the appropriate emergency call center. A detailed explanation with suitable screenshots can be found in the press release on the subject.
Important key data:
- Use of the iPhone 14 satellite emergency call will be possible in Germany in December 2022
- At least iOS 16.1 is required to use the function (iOS 16.1.1 already available)
- From the activation of a new iPhone 14, the service can be used free of charge for two years
"Some of the most popular travel destinations are off the beaten path and lack cell phone coverage. With emergency call SOS via satellite, the iPhone 14 family offers an indispensable tool that brings users the help they need, even if they have no cell phone reception"Said Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. "Our teams have worked tirelessly to overcome new technical challenges to bring this service to life and build a reliable on-site infrastructure.
