Is my iPad compatible with iPadOS 18?

The day before yesterday Apple first presented its new operating systems for 2024, including the iPad system iPadOS 18. This is the first time in 14 years that a pre-installed calculator has been added to the tablet, but with a few additional calculation and variable features. There is also "Apple Intelligence" (Apple's AI services on compatible devices), new functions for notes, messages, maps, the home screen, photos, Safari and games. This raises the question: Is my iPad compatible with iPadOS 18? The answer and further information can be found in this guide.

These iPad models are compatible with iPadOS 18

While Apple was not very keen on iPadOS 17 last year, a short, summary compatibility list delivered, the one for iPadOS 18 is a bit more extensive and detailed. This is due, among other things, to the differentiation between the Air and Pro models with A and M chips. The 6th generation iPad is now out of the question, at least one of the 7th generation is required. This is the complete list of devices compatible with iPadOS 18:

  • iPad Pro (M4)
  • iPad Pro 12,9 inch (3rd Gen or later)
  • iPad Pro 11 inches
  • iPad Air (M2)
  • iPad Air (3rd Gen or later)
  • iPad (7th Gen or later)
  • iPad mini (5th Gen or later)

Limitations on some compatible tablets

To use Apple Intelligence, i.e. AI services such as text generation and editing, image creation and editing, Genmoji and the like, devices with Apple Silicon are required. This means that at least an M18 chip must be installed for the on-device AI in iPadOS 1. In addition, Apple Intelligence will initially only be available as a beta and in US English from fall 2024.
