Sensitive content warning: Advice on nude recordings from macOS Sonoma

With the during the WWDC23 keynote In addition to the operating systems presented, which will be rolled out as an official upgrade in autumn 2023, there will be a nude filter on iPhone, iPad and Mac. This is no longer limited to family sharing and security settings for children's devices. The whole thing can also be used on your own device and without a family setup from iOS 17, iPadOS 17 and macOS 14 Sonoma. How you can set this up under macOS Sonoma, I'll show you here - with the procedure from the current one Sonoma Beta. This should not change further until the release.

Enable sensitive content warning in macOS 14 Sonoma

In the future, macOS will recognize nude photos in both photos and videos. If you want to protect yourself from this and not be exposed to relevant content without warning, then the path leads you to the system settings and there to the “Privacy & Security” area. This is how you proceed step by step:

  1. Click on the top left of the menu bar Apple logo ()
  2. From its drop-down menu, select the System settings ... from
  3. Click in the left menu item list Privacy
  4. Scroll right down and select Sensitive content warning from
  5. Activates the slider for "Warning about sensitive content"
From macOS 14 you will find the item "Warning about sensitive content" in the system settings under data protection & security.

If the slider is activated, the nude picture filter can be activated and deactivated for different apps and services. There will certainly be more points added over time.

App and service access: Currently only messages

If you have found and activated the slider as described above, an overview of the apps and services that can be protected with the new function will appear further down in the same window. In the current Beta version you can only activate and deactivate the slider for the messages app (Messages). I suspect that more apps and services will be added until the release of macOS 14 Sonoma in fall 2023. Safari and others would be useful, for example Browser, other messenger apps, the Mail app, social media apps and so on. After all, unwanted content can appear in many places.
