Sir Apfelot newsreel week 35, 2022

In a few days, the annual iPhone presentation is coming up as an Apple special event. But before that happens, there is a new edition of the Sir Apfelot newsreel. This time I will show you the Apple and tech news that particularly caught my eye in calendar week 35 of 2022. These include the following reports: Pack Amazon returns directly with DHL, price increases for streaming providers, affiliate fraud in the ChromeBrowser, iPhone 14 could enable satellite telephony, more rumors about the iPhone 14, design info for the next iPhone SE (4th generation) and much more.

In the Sir Apfelot newsreel for calendar week 35 of 2022 you will find the following reports, among others: DHL will soon be accepting unpackaged Amazon returns, consumer advice center is suing Disney+, Jane Horvath is leaving Apple, details on the design of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone SE 4, malware -Protection in macOS just keeps getting better, and then some.

DHL will accept unpackaged Amazon returns in the future

You don't like a product you bought from Amazon, but you don't have the outer packaging for the return? This should no longer be a problem from October 10, 2022. From then on, products can be taken to a DHL shop or DHL Post branch in their original packaging and placed in special return bags. In addition, the return label can be printed out on site, so you don't even need a printer at home for the process. However, there are exceptions. Because items that are too large, too heavy or fragile cannot be sent in the shipping bags provided by Amazon to DHL. There's more on the subject in a Entry from "Package there!".

Price increase due to Netflix ad-supported subscription

Like iFun this week in a Entry with reference to Bloomberg, the introduction of an ad-supported subscription by Netflix could be accompanied by a price increase for the other subscription models without advertising. The euro prices could be adjusted to the dollar prices, which would mean 2 euros more in the basic subscription, 2,50 euros more in the standard subscription and 2 euros more in the premium subscription. It is possible that the subscription with advertising will then assume the previous base price of 7,99 euros. Similar as with the subscription with advertising from Disney+ So nothing seems to be cheaper, but everything except streaming with advertising is more expensive.

Due to unexplained price increase: lawsuit against Disney +

iFun again, and Disney+ again: in another Entry It is about the fact that the Brandenburg consumer advice center not only warned the streaming provider, but also sued it. The lawsuit stems from the last price increase from 6,99 euros to 8,99 euros and the applicable Disney+ terms and conditions. "We have the right to change our prices effective at the start of a new subscription period", it says, among other things, but without the need to justify the price increase. Only an announcement at least 30 days before the price change is fixed. If a price increase is rejected, then the consequences are also not clearly defined - except that the subscription then ends after the current payment period. See the linked source for details.

Disguised as add-ons: Chrome browser becomes an affiliate revenue stream for scammers

Netflix Party, Netflix Party 2, Full Page Screenshot Capture – Screenshotting, FlipShope – Price Tracker Extension, AutoBuy Flash Sales – these five Google Chrome add-ons have manipulated user data from the browser in such a way, diverted and set affiliate cookies, that the respective providers have fraudulently generated income. The extensions were installed a total of 1,4 million times. Heise online alludes to this with reference to McAfee's investigations Post there. The linked source not only contains the installation numbers of the individual add-ons, but also their extension IDs for a precise check of your own installations:

Apple's head of data protection, Jane Horvath, is leaving the company promptly

"Apple's privacy chief Jane Horvath to leave the company soon' 9to5Mac captioned one Entry this week. In this, among other things, the career of the former programmers who hired Apple in 2011 is shown. She became more and more important in her position over the years as Apple focused more and more on the issues of data protection and privacy. Jane Horvath had to deal with the FBI, delegate the implementation of the EU GDPR at Apple and accompany similar processes. Referring to Bloomberg, the linked source states that she announced her upcoming departure from Apple in an internal memo. You can find more about this and an ELLE interview in the source.

Research by Howard Oakley: Mac malware protection greatly improved in 2022

With every upgrade and update, the Mac operating system macOS not only gets improvements (or at least changes) in the design, in individual functions and menus, but also for protection against malware. This malware is currently being rejected much better than at the beginning of the year. That emerges from a study by Howard Oakley, which in a Post of the Electric Light Blog is evaluated. "macOS now scans for malware whenever it gets the chance' reads the translated title. For example, an improvement to XProtect was introduced with the update to macOS 12.3. You can find a summary of the information in German here.

Rumors about the iPhone 14 (Pro): satellite telephony and privacy indicators

Even before the iPhone 13 was presented in 2021, there was speculation that the new Apple smartphone could bring the option of making calls or at least emergency calls via satellite. Now, shortly before the presentation of the iPhone 14, the rumor comes up again. For travellers, adventurers, seafarers, field researchers and other target groups, this possibility of securing could be interesting. Further details and the possibility that Globalstar will be used as a provider for the radio services will be published in a Entry pointed out by 9to5Mac.

Another rumor revolves around the front camera design of the iPhone 14 Pro. This should no longer have a notch, but a combination of pill and punchhole design. There have been so many stories in all sorts of blogs and tech magazines over the past few weeks that it's getting pretty annoying (it's just a tiny design detail, after all). Of the last stand is now: the combination of oval and round recess is to come. And in between, a black space should be created by appropriate adjustments to the display. For what reason? To display the camera and microphone privacy indicators introduced in iOS 14 in the space: Orange and green dots in the iPhone status bar - what is it?

iPhone SE 4 should be based on the iPhone XR instead of the iPhone 8

This March, Apple has that 3rd Gen iPhone SE presented. Like now, among other things, heise online berichtet, it could be the last iPhone with a home button and Touch ID. Because the design of the next iPhone SE should no longer be based on the iPhone 8 from 2017, but on the iPhone XR from 2018. Like the iPhone X, the iPhone XS and all other successors of the main series of Apple smartphones, this has a notch with the Technology for Face ID. At the bottom edge of the device extends the display, which fills the front; the home button is gone. The source refers to Apple connoisseur Jon Prosser.

  1. In terms of size, I would like the IPhone SE, but:
I'm curious if I'll be able to order the IPhone 14 Pro immediately after the presentation.

      1. After the IPhone 4, I bought the first IPhone SE. In the same year it served me very well on my Australian holiday. I had an Australian prepaid card in my iPhone for my stay. At that time I took about 2000 photos and videos with the iPhone as a supplement to my mirror reflex camera. Never had trouble reading. I only switched to a larger iPhone with the 6s. I will take the normal size for the 14 Pro because the 14 Pro Max is simply too big and unwieldy for me. Hope that satellite telephony is also possible with the 14 Pro. Then I might have additional security in the Australian outback. I'm looking forward to September 7th!

        1. Well, then I'll keep my fingers crossed that it turns out the way you want it to. Although I don't expect it... but one can have hope. 😊 I'm also looking forward to September 7.9th. Then it gets serious!

          1. Hi Jens,
            Thank you!
As the saying goes: “Hope dies last”. I really can't believe it either.

I wish you and your family a nice weekend!
            Gruss Horst
            PS
I read the article about the Onewheel and that you ride something like that. respect ! For health reasons, I better keep my hands off it.

          2. Hello Horst! Thank you. I wish you and the family a nice WE! And Onewheel is not as heavy as you think. Like cycling. Once your head gets it, you never forget it. 😂
